I can't do yoga because I'm not flexible.

Hi Yogis!

I have heard this line a few times, "I can't do yoga because I'm not flexible."

Well that’s just silly. OK, so actually I hear this all of the time!  It’s such a stereotype that yoga is all about flexibility.  I’m guilty of believing it.  When I started practicing I thought it was just a form of stretching.  Wow, was I wrong.  People go to yoga classes for all sorts of reasons. To let go of stress, to unwind, to find some peace, to quiet the mind, to gain strength, to burn calories, to discover themselves, to gain confidence, and yes to gain flexibility (this is not a prerequisite).   The asanas, or postures, are just a gateway to heal and work on all of these things.  Yes you’ll see pictures of yogis in crazy yoga postures.  They've grown into them!  Every time you step on your yoga mat you and your body are growing and changing.  

Thinking you shouldn't go to a class because you're not flexible enough is like not going to dinner because you're not full…

 

One of the greatest things about yoga class is you are not being judged, watched, or in competition with anyone.  It’s all about you on your little yoga mat island.  Your sweaty neighbor in a headstand really could care less that you're just enjoying a child’s pose!  That’s one of the reasons it’s so great!  We come together to practice as a community but for our own personal reasons.  When you walk out of class post Savasana I promise you’ll never say, ‘Well, looks like I won't be going back because I'm not flexible enough.’  

Find a studio that offers a free week or first class for free so you have nothing to lose.  Give it a try. Step out of your comfort zone.  You never know how your life could be changed.
