Home Practice Hurdles

While we love a good yoga class at our local studio, home practice has its benefits too! It is convenient, private, and often times more relaxing than practicing in a group setting. However, finding the motivation to move at home when there are temptations such as the tv or computer can make things tricky. Here are a few tips for starting to make your practice a habit and staying connected to your mat at home!

To start, make sure you have the proper gear. "Proper" is a loose term and you should use whatever works for you as long as it is safe. You'll want a good, grippy mat, fitted yoga appropriate clothing, and access to a guided practice at least to get you started. Additional props can be added at any time like blocks, straps, blankets, bolsters, and more - but none of these are required to start a practice.

Schedule your yoga time! Just like you would at the studio, set a time to start your practice and commit to that time. The only difference between home and the studio is that if you are "running late" you can still jump on your mat. If you miss your start time, simply adjust your practice by choosing a shorter guided yoga flow or committing to staying on your mat for a few extra minutes.

Lastly, don't let a setback derail you. Life happens and your mat will forgive you. If you miss a day, a week, or even a month of yoga, do not be afraid to get back to it! Always be safe, start slow, and listen to your body - but a little time on the mat is better than no time on the mat.
